[Guadalajara, Jal. April 21, 2019] Al Centro Rizoma del Migrante (www.rhizomecenter.org) is excited to announce Jorge Ramirez’s addition as Technology Strategist and newest member of the Advisor Council.

Jorge is a Mexican media artist and technologist based in Guadalajara. Since 2004, Jorge has developed an intermedia body of work traversing architecture, art, sound, science, and design. In 2012, Jorge founded the international multi-platform known as ANEMONAL (www.anemonal.org) to promote, explore, and establish networks through art, science, and technology hybrid projects. In 2017, he was selected by Ciudad Creativa Digital to curate and produce all technological art content for Guadalajara’s UNESCO Media Art City submission, which was later accepted.

“We are ecstatic to have Jorge join our cause at a time when he is exploring ways to incorporate community-driven design and technology as a tool for social change,” said Tran Dang, founder of The Rhizome Center for Migrants. “Jorge’s addition promises to invigorate our work empowering migrant communities, while harnessing Guadalajara’s position as a development and innovation city.”

Academic institutions play an important role in ensuring equitable access to education inside and outside of prison. In Mexico, the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California y the Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México have pioneered in-prison higher education programs that transform confinement into hope here in Mexico. This last week, academics, filmmakers, cross border prisoner rights and migrant rights groups, psychologists, and system-impacted people gathered in Mexicali for "Stories Without Borders: A Social Justice Film Screening and Conference on Incarceration, Deportation, and Higher Education". The conference was an open invitation to reimagine the carceral system from a borrowed U.S. model of punishment to one of true rehabilitation, and to actively identify the needs and barriers of those incarcerated in one country but released to another. In solidarity with these truly inspiring organizations and human beings who show up every day proving the impossible can be done, and to our co-panelists and moderator, Gustavo Álvarez, Dra.
