[Guadalajara, Jal. October 15, 2018] The Rhizome Center for Migrants (www.rhizomecenter.org) will now begin accepting applications for its 2019 Winter Educational Program.
The program will take place January 4-10, 2019, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, where law students will have ample opportunities to hear from migrants, asylum seekers and deportees, as well as migration experts, government officials and on-the-ground activists. By the end of the program, students will have developed a profound understanding of the interplay between regional migration policy, politics and law, and will have established a network of invaluable contacts in Mexico.
“Students who understand the external factors affecting migration, as well as the disproportionate impact of U.S. enforcement policies on displaced communities, will be better positioned to seek comprehensive solutions for migration challenges,” says Tran Dang, founder of The Rhizome Center for Migrants.
The Mexican American Bar Association of Houston (www.mabah.com) has long recognized Guadalajara’s geopolitical relevance in the study of migration and return migration and has provided a grant to support immigration and human rights students who want to participate in the program. “Our aim,” says Kristina M. Hernandez, MABAH’s President, “is to empower aspiring change agents who understand the injustices and concerns of the Hispanic community and can speak effectively with compassion on their behalf. This grant allows us to fulfill our core mission of serving the Hispanic community at large.”
This opportunity is currently open only to Texas law students and LL.M.s. To be considered for the program and this grant, students must submit their application by 11:59pm CDT, November 15th. For program and application details, please contact immersion@rhizomecenter.org.
