Through its @uteporalhistory and participation in the Bracero History Archive, UTEP has preserved 1,600+ interviews and testimonies from Mexican workers and their families connected to the Bracero Program, the U.S.-Mexico labor agreement that operated from 1942-1964. Many participants came from Western Mexico, including Jalisco, a major source of migrant labor during the program's operation.One of the few reception centers for braceros arriving in the United States is still standing. At the Rio Vista Bracero Reception Center in Socorro, Texas, "gas baths" and chemical treatments were used to violently strip, delouse, and fumigate Mexican laborers before they were assigned agricultural contracts.
