What is the #SoyMéxico program, and why isn’t it year-round in #Jalisco? The Soy México program allows children born in the U.S. to Mexican parents to locally register their birth and receive a CURP by simplifying bureaucratic barriers and, in some cases, reducing reliance on apostilles in practice. These documents enable access to school, healthcare, and other basic rights in Mexico by providing proof of identity and recognition of Mexican nationality. In Jalisco, the program will open this year from Aug-Oct. At The Rhizome Center for Migrants, we see how these barriers have relegated children to the margins of society. The most vulnerable children have not been able to obtain any ID for years, and were never able to integrate into the Mexican public school system. 👉 Our report on U.S. Citizens in Mexico: Displaced Without Protection –> tinyurl.com/mry4ayvj‼️We urgently call on the State of Jalisco to fully implement the 2024 federal reform eliminating apostille requirements for these registrations, or adopt a year-round, accessible model like states such as Morelos—so that every child can be recognized in Mexico. If you need help obtaining U.S. birth records, the apostille, or require a correction to vital documents, 📞 us on WhatsApp at: +52 33 2182 0836.

UTEP – The University of Texas at El Paso houses one of the largest and most accessible collections of oral histories documenting the Bracero experience. Through its @uteporalhistory and participation in the Bracero History Archive, UTEP has preserved 1,600+ interviews and testimonies from Mexican workers and their families connected to the Bracero Program, the U.S.-Mexico labor agreement that operated from 1942-1964. Many participants came from Western Mexico, including Jalisco, a major source of migrant labor during the program's operation. One of the few reception centers for braceros arriving in the United States is still standing. At the Rio Vista Bracero Reception Center in Socorro, Texas, "gas baths" and chemical treatments were used to violently strip, delouse, and fumigate Mexican laborers before they were assigned agricultural contracts. One of the lethal chemicals used, Zyklon B, a cyanide-based pesticide, was later used in Nazi extermination camps.UTEP's Institute of Oral History, together with the work of the university's anthropology, sociology, and history scholars, has helped document the experiences of braceros and their families while preserving an essential record of the human impact of U.S.-Mexico labor and immigration policies.Acknowledging that past, while helping forge a path forward that respects the humanity and dignity of all people who have migrated from one place to another, remains a guiding vision of The Rhizome Center for Migrants in our ongoing efforts to preserve these histories while creating new opportunities within Mexico for public engagement with the migrant experience.

A moral injustice has been corrected.Nearly 50 years after honorably completing his service, Alfonso is now a U.S. citizen. In a small ceremony with 20 other service members, mostly soldiers on active duty, he pledged allegiance to the U.S. for the second time. Originally from the State of Jalisco, Alfonso is among the many Jaliscienses who gave their life to the U.S. military. Though they sacrificed their lives to the U.S. Constitution and its people, they were not guaranteed the right to live there. Over 1,000 veterans have been banished from U.S. soil. A small number have been able to legally return, and an even smaller number, like Alfonso, have finally received what was promised long ago.The Rhizome Center for Migrants is committed to supporting deported and repatriated military veterans and spouses stranded overseas through legal aid and advocacy, crisis and mental health support, and access to earned labor benefits. No one who served the U.S. should ever be banned from living there.Immigrants have historically represented a vital portion of the U.S. military and are known for their exceptional service, making up around 20% of all Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. Approximately 40,000-45,000 foreign nationals actively serve in the Armed Forces, and some 700,000 foreign-born veterans live in the U.S.👉 More on how the U.S. recruits then fails its immigrant service members: www.aclusandiego.org/deported-veterans-report
