At a time when migration across the Americas is marked by forced displacement, deportation, and new levels of cruelty, the Rhizome Center's Migrants Day Food+Culture Fest stood as a vivid counterpoint: a migrant-led convening centering our shared humanity, supported by a Guadalajara community willing to cross cultural, geographic and language barriers to come together. This past World Migrant and Refugee Day, 400+ people gathered around food, music, art and stories from 20+ cultures and countries—not as mere spectators, but as part of a living community of people who had migrated, local families, businesses, volunteers and allies learning how to honor and support one another. “Seeing you all here today restores my hope in the world,” said Rhizome Center founder, Tran Dang, in her welcome remarks. During the festival, the audience heard from two Rhizome Center legal clients whose stories gave a glimpse into our wide-ranging work. One client was deported 22 years ago despite having a claim to U.S. citizenship. Soon he will return home with a U.S. passport. Another client, a military spouse, was a stark reminder that deportation can destabilize mixed-status families, including those connected to U.S. military service. The Rhizome Center is helping her to return to the U.S. permanently and reunite with her family. This annual convening would not be possible without our local donors @calo.agency and @tresflores8, our sponsors @speakeasycocina @letsphogdl @barriotoyo @lobacerveza @kombuchabelot, @patrimonioudeg, who generously donated the venue for our gathering, and @caminantasred for your collaboration since the first festival three years ago.Thank you to the American Legion Post 17, Foodies Group GDL, Democrats Abroad and @blackinguadalajara for ensuring that the festival would generate needed support for our mission, and @asfg.edu.mx students and our many volunteers for your commitment to our work.Thank you to our MC @wombay_777 @r.antwan_oficial @parivaar_by_aishaguirre @agathemusica @calordehabana and our many participants from around the world for another beautiful moment in which we built a house where all could belong.
