"I feel like I'm in a video game." In a world in which your crime is your immigration status, students of our 14th immigration program heard vastly different perspectives on what being criminalized has meant for long-time residents of the United States, U.S. veterans, and the U.S. spouses of those who are ultimately deported.Losing control over one's life can mean being deported in less than 24 hours, without notice, after a lifetime in the U.S. For others it can mean being torn from one's home, family, and community, chaotically moved around from detention center to detention center, then suddenly dumped in a foreign country in which one has no ties. This later is the situation of 16,000+ Cubans, Venezuelans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans, who have been deported to Mexico since January 2025.Among third country deportees is Jose Barco, a stateless U.S. purple heart veteran forced to seek international protection in Mexico. During our 14th immigration program, Jose and his wife shared their story of resilience and hope, as well as the path they are on now—a family unable to reunite until one of them can claim status in a country in which neither has ties. The message from impacted individuals to our participants was clear—we are intertwined. "Our lives are part of your work. We are also fighting to believe again."

This August, we’re joined by immigration law professor, Georgina Olazcon, and students from @uwschooloflaw and @utexaslaw. Our cohort brings a wealth of experiences to the program. This program, we are joined by former social workers, pastors, children of immigrants, and law students eager to make a difference in migrant lives. We're looking forward to spending the week with our latest cohort and providing them the context and building blocks for understanding what holistic, cross border legal representation is, and what it looks like in practice. Welcome to Guadalajara!
