We hope that what is today front-page news will remain an issue government officials in Mexico tackle until every last child is documented."Deportations dejan niños en el limbo" chronicles the story of our legal client, Hanna, whose #deportation years ago sent her daughter, Lina, down an unexpected path. Born in the U.S., Lina's reunification with her mom in Mexico resulted in years of bureaucratic obstacles, forcing Lina to spend her childhood outside of a classroom. The #SoyMéxico Program, a federal program that temporarily reduces the barriers to registration for U.S.-born children of Mexican parents, is still open in the State of #Jalisco. Dependent on funding, the program is expected to close later this month and will not re-open until some time next year.If your child was born in the U.S. and you have proof of identity and a least a copy of your child's birth certificate, you may be able to register your child with the state's civil registry. If your child is not eligible for the program, or you encounter other bureaucratic or legal obstacles, reach out to the Rhizome Center via our Whatsapp at 📞 33 2182 0836. We believe every child should be documented, and no child should be robbed of their future.🌐Read Hanna and Lina's story online –> www.informador.mx/deportaciones-dejan-ninos-con-doble-nacionalidad-en-el-limbo-l202610110002.html👉Our report for the @bakerinstitute on "U.S. Citizens in Mexico: Displaced Without Protection" –> www.bakerinstitute.org/research/us-citizens-in-mexico-displaced-without-protection

    The Rhizome Center for Migrants

Meet Rachel Rood-Ojalvo, our newest legal intern at The Rhizome Center for Migrants!A 3rd law student at @berkeleylaw, Rachel came to #Guadalajara with a conviction: People should not be deported—but when they are, they deserve the chance to live with dignity and safety.Having worked primarily in deportation defense in the U.S., Rachel wanted to understand what happens on the other side of the border. What happens to people after deportation? How do they rebuild their lives, recover their identities, reunite with their families, and navigate legal systems that often seem designed to keep them in limbo? And she's already making a difference! In just her first weeks with us, Rachel has helped two clients successfully apply for U.S. passports after decades of bureaucratic obstacles. One had been deported from the U.S. 22 years ago. Another had lived undocumented in Mexico for 19 years after her mom brought her here as a child. We're delighted to welcome Rachel to our team and to share in her journey toward becoming an immigration lawyer who understands not only the law, but the lives it shapes. Welcome, Rachel! 💚✨

    The Rhizome Center for Migrants

At a time when migration across the Americas is marked by forced displacement, deportation, and new levels of cruelty, the Rhizome Center's Migrants Day Food+Culture Fest stood as a vivid counterpoint: a migrant-led convening centering our shared humanity, supported by a Guadalajara community willing to cross cultural, geographic and language barriers to come together. This past World Migrant and Refugee Day, 400+ people gathered around food, music, art and stories from 20+ cultures and countries—not as mere spectators, but as part of a living community of people who had migrated, local families, businesses, volunteers and allies learning how to honor and support one another. “Seeing you all here today restores my hope in the world,” said Rhizome Center founder, Tran Dang, in her welcome remarks. During the festival, the audience heard from two Rhizome Center legal clients whose stories gave a glimpse into our wide-ranging work. One client was deported 22 years ago despite having a claim to U.S. citizenship. Soon he will return home with a U.S. passport. Another client, a military spouse, was a stark reminder that deportation can destabilize mixed-status families, including those connected to U.S. military service. The Rhizome Center is helping her to return to the U.S. permanently and reunite with her family. This annual convening would not be possible without our local donors @calo.agency and @tresflores8, our sponsors @speakeasycocina @letsphogdl @barriotoyo @lobacerveza @kombuchabelot, @patrimonioudeg, who generously donated the venue for our gathering, and @caminantasred for your collaboration since the first festival three years ago.Thank you to the American Legion Post 17, Foodies Group GDL, Democrats Abroad and @blackinguadalajara for ensuring that the festival would generate needed support for our mission, and @asfg.edu.mx students and our many volunteers for your commitment to our work.Thank you to our MC @wombay_777 @r.antwan_oficial @parivaar_by_aishaguirre @agathemusica @calordehabana and our many participants from around the world for another beautiful moment in which we built a house where all could belong.
